Bag of Beans - Contraceptives

In Health we begin our contraceptives unit today. In order to introduce the topic I have numbered bags of beans with different % of black and white beans. Students reach in and pull out a bean noting the color. After repeating that 10 times we calculate a % effectiveness. Once all of the bags were lined up, I revealed the actual percents and had them guess what we were leaning about. Contraceptives!

HIV/AIDs Attitude Survey

I gave a brief survey to my health class before and after our HIV/AIDs unit. Picutred below are the results. Quite a few attitudes surrounding HIV/AIDs shifted over the course of only a couple weeks.

Friends to Block: STD Facebook Profiles

To reveiw the different types of STDs, my students created Facebook profiles for the various diseases. Look closely and you should be able to find lots of information including pathogen, number of cases, symptoms, dangers, etc.

Writing Wills

Below is an example of the will one of my students wrote in Business Law. It was pretty creative. After the students wrote them they printed them out and signed them, as well as signed each others wills as a witness.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

AP

I, AP, of 909 9th street, Sloan IA 51055 declare that this is my will. I revoke all wills and codicils that I have previously made. I, AP, certify that I am of sound mental health and contractual capacity.

FIRST: I nominate my dog, Skipper, as executor of this will. If for any reason he should fail to qualify or cease to act as such, I nominate my pet rock, Lenny, as exuctor. If for any reason he should fail to qualify or cease to act as such, I nominate Money Bags Bank, a CA corporation, to act as executor. I direct that neither my dog nor my pet rock be required to post bond as executor or executrix.

SECOND: I empower the executor or executrix to pay all of my funeral, debts, taxes, and other expenses.

THIRD: I empower the executor of executrix to sell any of my real and personal property not specified in this will.

FORTH: My assets shall be divided as follows:

(A)   To my pet rock, Lenny IV, I give the last soda in the fridge.

(B)   To my dog, Skipper, I give all the dog food.

(C)   To my potato chip that looks like George Washington, George the Potato Chip, I give you to Skipper so that way Skipper can eat you when he runs out of dog food.

(D)   To my Business Law Teacher, Miss Post, I give10 yellow skittles.

 FIFTH: If there are any assets remaining after payments of all my debt and distribution of specific assets, including but not limited to real property, personal property, causes of action, or any other assets, of whatsoever nature and wheresoever situate, I give, bequeath and device such residue to my math teacher, JW, per capita. I’ve got NO money so you get nothing, J! Sucks for you!

STD Bleach and Peroxide Activity

This bleach and peroxide activity marks the beginning of our STD unit:

 1. Every student gets a plastic cup full of water except for 3. Those 3 lucky students get a plastic cup half full of hydrogen peroxide which signifies that they have an STD, however they do not know that this is the case. Everyone thinks they have a cup of water.

2. Each student picks 3 people to share their water with. One student pours half of their cup in the other students cup and then vice versa.

3. After they get done sharting water they return to their seat and write down the names of the 3 people they shared their water with.

4. Once everyone is back in their seats they are informed 3 of them were infected with an STD. The students are asked if they know who those 3 are. Normally no one will know who they are.

5. The students are then told that the only way to know for sure if someone has an STD is to be tested for them and that is what you are going to do now. 

6. For the "testing" simply drop a little bit of bleach in each students cup using an eyedropper. It their water begins to fizz/bubble they have an STD! Remember that only 3 people started out with an STD. Of course many more students will have water that fizzes.

7. After "testing", the original 3 carriers of an STD are shared. 

 What analygies can be made from this activity?

• You can not tell if someone has an STD by just looking at them. 
• STD’s are easily passed from person to person
• The only way to know you have an STD is to be tested
• 1 out of 4 people in America who are sexually active outside of marriage (committed relationship) have an STD

Did you know that potential employers may only spend 15 seconds looking at a resume? In order to secure an interview a resume has to be perfect. Last week we finished up our cover letters and resumes in Computer Applications. We learned a lot about how to write these two important documents in order to secure an interview.
